How the heir to the Austro-Hungarian throne came to be assassinated in Sarajevo was a chapter of accidents. It began with the Congress of Berlin in 1878 and ended when the owner of the car Franz-Ferdinand was travelling in opted to stand guard on the running board on the opposite side of the vehicle from the archduke, so leaving him exposed to his assassin’s bullets.
