Bromsgrove Preparatory School awarded WFA Quality Mark for Teaching and Learning about the First World War

22 April 2026

Congratulations to Bromsgrove Preparatory School, Worcestershire, which has successfully achieved our Quality Mark accreditation following a rigorous assessment of their commitment to ensuring students learn about the history of the First World War.

With Plaque
Mr Martin Barratt (Head of History), Mr Rob Shone, Monty Y and Zoya A-B (Year 8) outside the Memorial Chapel dedicated to fallen Old Bromsgrovians. The foundation stone was laid by Mrs Spreckley, the mother of three brothers who died in the First World War.

They achieved this recognition under the leadership of Head of History Martin Barratt who writes:

“We are extremely proud to receive the Quality Mark. My academic roots lie in Ancient and Medieval History, but it was during teacher training—through accompanying experienced teachers on school trips—that my fascination with the First World War truly developed. Observing their enthusiasm, depth of knowledge, and commitment to telling the human stories behind the conflict inspired me to want to do the same for my own pupils. This interest is deeply rooted in our school’s own history, where the sacrifice and impact of the First World War have been remembered for over a hundred years. A memorial chapel on site, built to honour every former pupil who fell, stands as a constant and powerful reminder of the human cost of the conflict. Within it is a window dedicated by the family of Sweet-Escott, a former pupil remembered on the Menin Gate, reinforcing the enduring connection between our school community and the wider history of the war.”

In order to achieve this award, which is valid for three years, the school had to complete a comprehensive guided audit of the provision made for this aspect of the syllabus. Their audit is then assessed by an inspector of schools and the school is given feedback.

Bromsgrove’s assessor said:

“The application is very strong overall. I particularly note:

  • Inclusive differentiation
  • Strong student response in terms of research and creative writing
  • The range of extra-curricular opportunities offered through educational visits and a well-stocked library”

Schools that are awarded the Quality Mark can look forward to the following benefits:

  •  A plaque
  • A certificate
  • A logo which can be used on school stationery and documentation
  • Publicity in WFA publications and social media
  • An invitation to bring a group of students to the annual Remembrance Service at the Cenotaph

Bromsgrove has accepted this invitation and will join the Remembrance Service this year.
