Vice President of the WFA, Dr Christopher Pugsley has generously allowed the WFA to present his Sandhurst Occasional Paper No 8 published in 2011 on "Haig and the Implementation of Tactical Doctrine on the Western Front".

Please use the link below to read and download the paper.

In Haig and the Implementation of Tactical Doctrine on the Western Front, Pugsley offers a revisionist view of Field Marshal Douglas Haig and his command of the British Expeditionary Force (BEF).

The paper challenges the traditional narrative of Haig as an incompetent commander who senselessly sacrificed soldiers' lives. Instead, it portrays Haig as an "exceptional military manager" who oversaw the evolution and professionalization of the British Army.
