The Coming of Age: British Airpower on the Western Front 1914 –1916
In 1914 the RFC's initial role was tactical reconnaissance for the army.
During 1915 'air fighting' emerged as a new role, initially to restrict enemy reconnaissance.
By the start of the Somme campaign in 1916 the RFC had grown considerably; about a quarter of its squadrons supported army level operations, the rest directly supported the land battle.
This talk examines from technical, tactical and organisational perspectives, the development of British air power on the Western Front during this formative period.
British airpower on the Western Front from 1914 to 1916 evolved rapidly from a small reconnaissance component into a crucial, specialized force focused on supporting ground operations through artillery observation, photography, and aerial fighting.
Our speaker is Gp Capt Chris Finn (Rted) served in the RAF for 33 years as a navigator, primarily on the Buccaneer, and was a weapons and tactics specialist.
