Kitchener’s Volunteers go to War: Sulva August 1915
When Lord Kitchener called for volunteers for his New Armies at the start of the Great War, men responded in their hundreds of thousands, and the process of turning civilians with no military experience into effective fighting units began. But when the first units went into action against the enemy, it was not against the Germans on the Western Front, but against the forces of the Ottoman Empire on the Gallipoli Peninsula. And the first two battalions into action were from Yorkshire. This is the story of what happened to them over the course of less than three weeks in August 1915.
