1000 Yards, 1000 Bodies - WW1 In A Single Field

Published on 11 January 2026

Dan Hill, whose highly successful YouTube channel 'Battle Guide' is probably well known to many WFA members, recently approached The Western Front Association's TrenchMapper™ team to seek technical assistance with a new video he was planning.

Dan explained he was planning on telling the story of the war through a 'single field' in France using a 1,000 yard square, which was the standard sized square used on WW1 trench maps.

After discussing the various options with the team, Dan decided a good example would be 'square 25' (which is - technically speaking 57D.R.25) at Thiepval on the Somme.

Using the WFA's TrenchMapper technology Dan has created a fantastic video which we are pleased to share below.

Once again, the work of the TrenchMapper™ team in gathering together thousands of WW1 era maps has borne fruit.
