William Shaw died of wounds on this day in 1916
William Shaw was born in Burnley in 1880 to parents Richard and Mary Shaw.
In 1909, he married Catherine Burns, known as Kate or Katie, an unmarried mother of two children, John aged 4 and Frances, also known as Fanny, aged 1.
In 1911, William’s occupation was recorded as ‘Shoemaker’ working for the Lancashire and Yorkshire Railway Company, and Catherine worked as a ‘Spinner’ in the cotton industry.
At the outbreak of war, they lived at 61 Finsley Gate in Burnley.
He enlisted in Nelson, Lancashire, soon after the declaration of war.
He arrived in France after training in early 1916.
He was severely wounded and returned to the UK where he was tended at the Horton (County of London) War Hospital, a major military hospital located in Epsom, Surrey.
He died of his wounds on 12 September 1916. He was 36 years old.
He was buried in Epsom Cemetery, with 8 other soldiers, on 14 September 1916. He is commemorated there on the screen wall.
